Goal

To treat washdown wastewater from the kennels for reuse for washdown whilst providing a useable landscaped area that required no irrigation.

Obstacles

Difficult wastewater to treat due to dog hair and other contaminants

Solution

Contaminated water treatment reedcells

Key Project Features

The low energy, passive treatment system we have implemented comprises:

  • A hair filter
  • Three stages of vegetated reedbeds for treatment of contaminated washdown water
  • A disinfection system
  • Syphons for low energy transfer of water between treatment stages
  • Monitoring of water quality and replenishment with rainwater

Key Project Outcomes

By implementing our contaminated water treatment reedcells we have achieved:

  • Double use of landscaped area
  • Production of filtered and purified water for hosing down kennels each day – 2ML per year of reuse water
  • Nutrient-rich water provided for vegetation
  • Zero energy transfer between reedbeds = reduced energy used in pumping
  • Up to 6,000L of water saved each day
